The Recap
What are recaps? We’re so glad that you asked. The recap is one of the most important parts of a Quizmaster’s job after the show. Think of your recap as your timecard AND an advertisement for the show! Tell the world about the amazingness of your show and at the same time you’ll be telling payroll that you need to be paid for your show as well! Two amazing things all at once!
Once you end your shift (with the button that tells you to end your shift on the bottom right corner of your screen) the host site will bring you to your recap! Your recap is divided into three parts.
Remember! To edit any section of your recap you must first click the stylus icon to the right of the section and then when you’re done with that section you must hit “Save” otherwise you didn’t really do anything.
Game Details
This is precisely what it sounds like; these are all the details of the game itself. You’ll need to double-check and confirm that all of the details are correct!
- Start Time
- End Time
- Player Count- this one may or may not be filled in/accurate so make sure you give an approximate headcount
- Team Count
- Empty Tables- this is really helpful for the office! It lets us know how much we are growing over time and how much more room we have to grow.
- Question Rating- Did you and your teams love the questions so much? Great! Rate it a 5! Did you hate them? Rate it a 5! Ermmm… not a 5? Be honest. We can take it!
- Internal Notes- These notes are only visible to your loving Regional Managers! So if there’s something you think we should know about your game, this is where it goes! For example, if your game started 15 minutes late due to a sporting event, let us know here so that when we look at your times for the night we don’t worry and think that something was wrong.
Timecard
Your timecard is how we pay you! This MUST be correct if you’d like to get paid! (if you don’t want to get paid then you can donate directly to the Regional Managers… wait… We’re being told that’s not how it actually works…)
Your work time starts when you arrive at the venue and go live! This should be 30 minutes before the start time of your game. Remember, if you’re going to be late please let your RMs know as soon as possible so that they can mark it down and also let the venue know. You will NEVER need to contact the venue yourself.
Your end time will be whenever you finish working at the end of the night after you’ve taken lovely pictures for your recap and cleaned everything up so that it’s just the way you found it when you got there.
Public Recap
Everything from here to the end of your recap is posted on King Trivia’s main website so the rule of thumb here is that we want nothing but rainbows, sunshine, and unicorns!
You MUST have at least one good picture for the night in your recap. The blog post is optional (even though we think that it’s super fun) but if you choose to write something there please remember that the same rules apply, nothing but happiness.
Once you’ve finished the final section of your recap and clicked “Save” there is only one thing left to do… PUBLISH! And now, your recap is complete and your hosting night is over!
Recap Tips & Tricks
Do’s
- Run your recap through spell check before posting.
- Make sure team names are in Bold the first time they are mentioned in the recap.
- Be creative with how you write the recap - want to write it as a Hamilton-inspired spoken word? Go for it! Got an itch to do a series of Haikus? Awesome! Have a knack for suspense sci-fi fiction? I can't wait to read it!
- Some fun things to discuss in your recap: funny wrong answers, the drinking round, random celebrity appearances (real or fictional), the spontaneous air guitar concert after Round 3, and any other random fun things that happened.
- Pictures of these things make happy Regional Managers:
- Teams having fun
- Winning teams with their prices
- Drinking Round shenanigans
- Most Spirited team
- Dogs and other pets at the venue!
- The delicious yummy things that you got with your QM tab
- A selfie – a picture of our favorite person!
Don’ts
- Don't talk about how "it was a slow night" or "there were fewer teams than usual." Remember, your post is a way to advertise your game. Focus on the teams that stayed and the fun everybody had.
- If you encounter any technical issues, it's probably best not to highlight those in your post. That's what the Internal Notes section is for.
- Try not to give a play-by-play of teams and where they placed after each round. Not only will it lose the interest of the reader, but the final score is also all that matters to most of the teams.
- Never bad-mouth the content of the night's quiz in your recap, even if a particular question or round did suck. That's what the Internal Notes section is for.
- If you're going to be gone the following week, don't mention it in your recap (or announce it to your players or the venue staff). Your players probably adore you and they may not show up the following week if they know you won't be there.
- Pictures of these things make sad Regional Managers:
- Blurry Photos
- An empty-looking venue (this is not a production of Les Mis, so please no empty chairs at empty tables)
- Half-eaten food or messy tables- Eeew
And most importantly, if you have any questions about your recap or are running into trouble with it, contact your Regional Managers as soon as possible! If they don’t know that there’s a problem then they can’t help you with it.
