Game Night Overview

An overview of how a typical trivia night goes

Before the show

  • Download a digital copy of the question set.
  • Put together an amazing playlist of music!
  • Read over the quiz for the night - make sure you're comfortable with any difficult pronunciations.
  • Arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of the game to check in with the venue, go live, and get set-up.
  • Ask these 4 super important questions to make sure you are set-up for success:
    • What’s my audio set-up?
    • What are the prizes for the night?
    • Is there a drinking round tonight?
      • If there is, what is the prize?
    • How does my Quizmaster tab work tonight?
  • Set-up your audio for the night and then start playing those TUNES! (King Trivia won’t tell you what kind of music to play but read the room and use your good judgment please!)
  • Start making announcements and get the folks excited to play trivia!
  • Mingle amongst the people and see if they want to play, help them get logged on, and make a few new friends!

During the Show

  • Starting off on the right foot is key! Hit 'em with a razzle-dazzle introduction! Add your own pizzazz and personality to it. Just don’t forget the 4 keynotes that MUST be in every introduction:
    • Your name- we won’t ask you to wear a name tag as long as you remember to tell ‘em who you are!
    • The rules! What’s a game without rules? Candyland with a toddler! If you have ever tried it, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about here!
      • Don’t shout out the answers
      • Don’t cheat
      • The Quizmaster has the final say
    • Explain Double-or-Nothing
    • Tell them what the prizes are for the night. We want to know how many tacos and beers we could possibly win if we come to your game!
  • Round 1 – General Knowledge
    • Double or Nothing is in play. (12 points possible)
      • 6 general knowledge questions, one of which (question 6) is our “Question of the Day.” This question is posted on all of King Trivia’s socials and in the weekly King Trivia Newsletter. It allows players to come into the game already prepared with an answer (and it will make them feel super smart before the game even begins).
  • Round 2 – Picture Round
    • Double or Nothing is in play. (16 points possible)
      • A visual round with 8 pictures.
  • Round 3 – Theme Round
    • Double or Nothing is in play. (12 points possible)
      • The same format as Round 1, but pay attention to the theme description as it has instructions explaining the round and its theme. Some example instructions: “all answers contain the letters M-O-M” or “all questions or answers will relate to cars and car terminology.” This is the only other round to provide 2 or 3 Extra Questions. Also, brace yourself for puns and dad jokes because we love them and we think we are hilarious!
  • Round 4 – The Clue Round!
    • NO Double or Nothing. (10 points possible)
      • 5 clues will be given about a famous person, group, creature, thing, or place. This person (if it’s a person at all) can be alive, dead, real, fake, human, non-human, or any combination of those. A correct answer after the first clue is worth 10 points; a correct answer after the second clue is worth 8 points, and so on until the final clue is worth 2 points. Only one guess per team is allowed. Any incorrect guesses incur -1 point (the only time throughout the game we get greedy and take away a point for a wrong answer).
  • Round 5 – Find the Connection
    • Double or Nothing is in play. (20 points possible!)
      • 10 questions. Questions 1-9 seem random, but their answers have something in common (a "connection", if you will). Question 10 will always be asking what the previous 9 answers have in common. The connection can be part of or the entire answer. Some examples of connections could be:
        • All answers contain an X-Men character (with answers being The Perfect Storm, Cyclops, and Colossus of Rhodes)
        • All answers contain a pair of double letters (with answers being Bookkeepers, Millennium, and Cappuccino)
  • The Drinking Round/Spirit Round
    • This one is our favorite but it’s not worth any points! Some venues have this round and others don’t (but that’s why you ask ahead of time so that you know!) It’s essentially a little baby brain break because they just racked their brains to find that connection! (It’s hard! We know!)
  • Round 6 – The Matching Round
    • Double or Nothing is in play. (20 points possible)
    • A Mix & Match round. The teams are given 10 answers PLUS 2 fake answers. No "question" will have more than one correct answer and no answer will be used more than once.
  • Round 7 – List Round
    • Double or Nothing is in play. (18-20 points possible)
      • Oftentimes, this round will be a list of 10 answers (10 highest-grossing Robert Downey Jr. films, 10 largest countries of the world by area, etc.). Occasionally, the list will only have 8 or 9 answers. This round could also be multiple questions each with multiple answers (3 questions each with 3 answers, 2 questions each with 5 answers, etc.)
  • Tie Breaker
    • Every question set will come with a tie-breaker. You'll only need to use this if you need to settle a tie for a ranking that gets a prize (traditionally, this is only first, second, and third place). There are NO points awarded for winning the tie-breaker.

After the Show

  • Announce the winners
  • Hand out the prizes
  • Take pictures of the delightful things and people and such for your recap
  • Mingle and make merriment
  • Pack everything up and leave it just how you found it
  • Complete your recap
